Physical Signs of Abuse or Neglect
Elderly victims may not be able to communicate what is happening in the facility. In some situations, the patient will choose not to bring the subject up for fear of some sort of retaliation by nursing home staff. As Chicago Elder Law attorneys, we encourage you to be aware of physical signs of abuse or neglect such as:
- Poor hygiene
- Sudden changes in weight, which could be due to dehydration or malnutrition
- Hair loss
- Bed sores
- Unusual bruising, which could result from falling or being strapped to the bed
Less Obvious Signs of Nursing Home Neglect or Abuse
Aside from physical changes in your loved one’s appearance, you should also watch for:
- Behavioral changes
- Physical or emotional withdrawal
- General unresponsiveness
- Disappearance of personal items
- Unusual financial transactions
